A van of DAV Public School, Neshta, taking students home met with a terrible fate just 5 kms away from the school as it fell into the drain of the Muhawa village.

Eight children, all aged between 7 to 14 years , belonging to the nearby villages, were killed and 15 injured when their school van fell into a drain at Muhawa village, 35 km from Amritsar.

Van driver Charanjit Singh fled after breaking open a window. “The driver was speeding and driving rashly. He joined duty only on Monday. I warned him about the narrow bridge ahead that doesn’t have railings but he didn’t listen. Suddenly the front tyres were in the air and we landed in the drain,” said Class 11 student Karambir Singh. Karambir, the braveheart, helped save many of his bus-mates and pulled out seven bodies.

He said the doors were jammed and he had to break open window panes to come out and rescue the students. “Gradually, the bus got submerged in the drain. I had to pull out seven bodies of children I travelled with daily. It is shocking,” he said, adding some of the senior students managed to swim to safety but the younger ones were the casualty.

Those critically injured were rushed  Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar, while six were admitted to a private hospital at Chheharta. Deputy commissioner Varun Roojam, who was at the site, said eight students were killed. Police and school authorities were also helping with the rescue at the spot
