Shaken, Stirred & Spat: James Bond Brosnan endorses Pan Masala

Everyone knows James Bond likes his martini “shaken, not stirred’. But how would he like to spit his pan masala?

Former Bond star Pierce Brosnan, who played the suave, unflappable 007 in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough, flaunts a can of pan masala in ads that debuted on Friday in newspapers, billboards and channels

On Oct. 7, Indian newspapers carried front-page advertisements splashed with images of a bearded Pierce Brosnan, best known for playing the suave secret service agent, holding a pack of pan masala. In a television commercial released on the same day, the Irish actor is seen using a tin of Pan Bahar, a pan masala brand, as a 007-ish weapon. “Class never goes out of style,” he says in the ad.

“We know today that we are the world capital for mouth cancers,” said Dr. Vishal Rao, a Bangalore-based oncologist with Healthcare Global Enterprises Ltd., a network of cancer centers in India. “India removes so many jaws, throats, tongues,” he said.

“My message to Pierce Brosnan is do not endorse a product you do not use,” he said.

Asked how much Mr. Brosnan was paid for the endorsement, Vikash Shukla, head of marketing for the manufacturer, said the information was “confidential.”

The social media reaction to Mr. Brosnan’s new endorsement was brutal when not sarcastic.
