Sartaj Aziz landed in Amritsar a day before for meet
Pakistani de facto foreign minister Sartaj Aziz landed one day prior in Amritsar in order to attend the global “Heart of Asia (HOA)” conference in Afghanistan. He landed early because of the uncertain weather conditions. On arrival he presented a bouquet and “a get well soon” card to Sushma Swaraj.
After some hours, Aziz along with foreign ministers of four countries called on Narendra Modi who talked about that it is very important to end terrorism in Afghanistan to maintain stability. However, there’s no formal talk scheduled between him and Indian leaders.
In the run up to the conference,Pakistan had pushed for resumption of talks with statements by Aziz and Pakistani Commissioner to Abdul Basit to that effect.India,on the other hand has stuck to its stand of not engaging in a dialogue with Pakistan as long as cross-border terrorism persists.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had attended the HOA conference in Islamabad and both the sides announced resumption of a comprehensive bilateral dialogue which of course never took off.
Several officials of several countries today prepared a draft “Amritsar Declaration” to be released during the HOA conference. Modi and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani will together inaugurate the conference tomorrow.
The six keys on which the countries are focusing are Disaster Management,counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics,trade and infrastructure, regional infrastructure and education.
