Why Punjabi Heroines Prefer to work in Southern movies!
A list of Punjabi actress moving to Southern filmdom for fame and money in unending – Tapsi Pannu, Samiksha Singh, Poonam Bajwa, Kirath Bhattal, #Kulraj Randhawa, Simran Bagga, Pooja Batra, Khushboo, Nagma, Charmme Kaur, Namita, Tamanna Bhatia and Bhumika Chawla are just some of them who are doing well down south.
Samiksha Singh, seen in Vaapsi in a strong woman role, says “The reason I’ve done only five films in Punjabi and picked work in South cinema is because I refuse to be part of a film where the hero is flirting with three girls at a time. I don’t want to be a face in the crowd or a frame filler for the hero.”
It’s not that Hollywood, Bollywood or Southern movies don’t have major pay gap between male and female actors but the difference is disproportionately larger in the Punjabi movies, where a lead actor may get 3-10 times the salary of his female counterpart.
Actresses in Punjabi cinema frequently have not much to do except be arm candies, heavily made up to sing, dance, flirt (sometimes 3-4 girls at a time) with the leading man and play damsel in distress, and they get paid peanuts accordingly.
But then Popular singer-actors like #Diljit, with their own fan following, obviously command higher salary, while none of the current actresses are as popular.
We have seen some Punjabi women-oriented films in like #Needhi Singh and #Gelo. There have been many other movies Angrej, Channo, Ardaas, Love Punjab, Kudesan and Qissa Punjab with strong women character. Hopefully, this period of ‘alpha-hero-worship’ in Punjabi cinema will soon transition to a more balanced world, where performance and talent will matter more than the gender.
