MLA Bains Physically removed from House: High Drama

September 09 | Chandigarh

A high drama prevailed at the Punjab Assembly session, at Chandigarh on Friday as the Punjab Speaker asked Independent MLA  to leave the House. Bains had apparently got aggressive over not being allowed to speak on the issue of Punjab not demanding the bill for releasing water to Rajasthan and defied the Speaker, Charanjit Singh Atwal’s order.

Independent legislators from Ludhiana,Balwinder Singh Bains and his brother Simarjeet Singh Bains were hence, physically removed from the Punjab Assembly. Atwal had earlier asked Simarjeet to leave the House. When he refused, the Speaker ordered the watch and ward staff to physically take him out of the Assembly. Notably, he is a part of the newly launched Aawaaz-e-Punjab, the forth front formed in Punjab, by ex- BJP MP, Navjot Singh Sidhu. His elder brother, Balwinder Singh Bains also joined him in the protest. The brothers, who had a scuffle with the security, were forcibly lifted and taken out.

This is the first instance in this session that someone has been ordered out by the Speaker for defying his orders.

Simarjit was thrown out of the Assembly building on the road and his kurta was torn in the process. Though Atwal did not allow recording of the issue that Simarjeet Bains raised, the MLA held a press conference later. He said he wanted to raise the issue of Punjab allowing Rajasthan to use the state’s river waters for free. He said he wanted to move a private member’s resolution that Punjab demand Rs 16 lakh crore from Rajasthan for using the river water since 1965.
