Haryana INLD leader Satbir Singh gets 7 years for corruption

NEW DELHI: Former assembly speaker and leader Satbir Singh Kadian was sentenced to seven years’ jail by a city court on Friday in a two-decade-old case for irregularities in procurement by Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd when he headed the organisation in the early 1990s.

The court also fined Kadian (66) Rs 50 lakh. He and four others were earlier held guilty of offences like criminal conspiracy, misappropriati-on of movable property and criminal breach of trust by a public servant under the Indian Penal Code and criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Act.

Refusing to show leniency to the INLD politician – who has also been a legislator from Haryana – the court said Kadian enjoyed the trust of people and was considered to be a role model by the nation but he misused his position.
