A speeding Punjab government publicity van rammed two motorcyle-borne youths, killing them on the spot on Bhadson Road in Patiala.
The victims, both in their 20s, were on their way to Sidhuwal village in Patiala when the van hit their bike.

While 22-year-old Gurtej Singh belongs to Kalajhar in Sangrur, Harkirat Singh is from Allowal in Patiala. Driver of the van, Monu, is on the run even as Patiala Police registered a case of negligent and rash driving causing death against him.

Punjab government had rolled out 50 such hi-tech vans in June to list out achievements of the Akali Dal-BJP alliance. Photos of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal are pasted on the vans.
The police have registered the case on the statement of the deceased’s friend Pushpinder Singh. Following a complaint by the victims’ friend Pushvinder Singh, police have registered a case under sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against the van driver Monu, a Uttar Pradesh resident, who is at large.
