Navjot Sidhu's wife, ex-Olympian Pargat Singh join Congress

NEW DELHI: Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu and former Olympian Pargat Singh after trying to go solo with Awaaz-e-Punjab and failed negotiation with Arvind Kejriwal of AAP but finally ended up joining the Congress party on Monday.
Pargat and Kaur met the Congress high command in New Delhi last week to seal the deal. Later, both met Punjab Congress President Captain Amarinder Singh and discussed the formalities of their joining the party.

Elections to the Punjab assembly are likely to be held early next year. Sources said the two met Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi last week and decided to join the Congress party fold.

Earlier, announcing the decision, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh welcomed them in the party fold, saying Congress will be further strengthened ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections with the joining of like-minded people.

The Bains brothers Simarjit and Balwinder Singh, both of whom were independent MLAs from Ludhiana, have since tied up with AAP.

The announcement of Pargat and Kaur joining the party was made in presence of senior Congress leaders, including party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
