Has Congress offered Navjot Singh Sidhu Deputy CM post?
Amritsar: Congress knows that mercurial Navjot Singh Sidhu can be the difference between Congress in power versus five more years of opposition. Last week the party again extended an olive branch to former BJP MP, saying he was “most welcome” to join the party. To bring him to its side, Congress is understood to have offered Sidhu the deputy chief minister’s post if he joins hands with the party in the Punjab assembly elections.
Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday said he had no reservations on Navjot Singh Sidhu and other leaders of Awaz-e-Punjab joining the Congress.
Sources close to the ex-cricketer, who left the BJP recently and formed his own outfit, said on Wednesday that Congress has said it is willing to consider the “number two post” in case the party wins the election.
The Congress sees the Punjab election as an important for its revival. Congress is eyeing the Goa and Gujarat polls and a poor showing in Punjab is expected to affect them there.
Amid speculation over Mr Sidhu joining the party, Mr Singh met Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and is learnt to have discussed the issue besides the political situation in poll-bound Punjab.
At an individual level, Sidhu, Pargat Singh and Balwinder Bains could win 3 certain seats for whichever party they join and pull sikh and even Hindu votes in other regions. As latest opinion polls show a slender lead for Congress over the Aam Aadmi Party, Sidhu can get Congress that crucial 1-3% votes that can make all the difference.
