Breaking | Navjot Kaur Sidhu resigns from BJP
Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, resigned from the primary membership of the BJP today.
Sidhu, MLA from Amritsar East constituency, sent a one-line resignation to Vijay Sampla, president of the party’s Punjab unit. A press release by the party said that her resignation was accepted.
The resignation comes weeks of speculation over the status of the BJP MLA. Party leaders stated that they had stopped inviting Navjot to functions as her resignation was just a matter of time. The latter claimed she had been skipping them on her own. There were intense rumours that the couple would join the Aam Aadmi Party but talks broke down reportedly over the question of the chief ministerial-candidate. She was known to be unhappy with the working of the party and had for long been criticising the BJP’s majority partner, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Reacting to the boycott call, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said, “Who are they to not invite me? I have stopped going to party functions on my own. I have my own reasons to not resign from the party. But it is sure I will resign soon.”
Her resignation came over a month after her husband floated a new political front in Punjab, Awaaz-e-Punjab this September and vowed to defeat the Akalis, Congress and the AAP.
The three-time MP of the Bhartiya Janata Party from Amritsar had quit his Rajya Sabha membership in July and resigned from the saffron party in September this year.
His political future hangs in balance after announcing that the front will not become a political party. With assembly elections due in Punjab early next year, he is now awaiting an invite from the Congress or the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) , it is learnt.
