BJP poll manifesto ‘charter to uplift the social strata’ for Punjab
Jalandhar, January 23
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley released the BJP’s poll manifesto for Punjab here today. Among other things, it promises 2 kg of desi ghee and 5 kg of sugar to all blue-card holders besides free education for their daughters up to the university level. The minister termed the manifesto as a ‘charter to uplift the social strata’.
Addressing the media, he said the SAD-BJP government had done enough to uplift the state infrastructure. “From constructing six airports to well-connected highways and rail links, the state is already riding high on development. The agenda now is to uplift the social infrastructure of the state,” he said.

Asked how the saffron party would provide desi ghee at the rate of Rs 25 to the poor families, as mentioned in the manifesto, BJP’s manifesto committee chairman Kamal Sharma claimed it was a typing error and that the government would only give cooking oil.
The manifesto promises employment to each household, farmers’ income commission (FIC) to explore revenue generation opportunities, diesel credit card for farmers (credit limit not mentioned) and waiving debts of farmers with land-holdings up to 2.5 acres. It also pledges Rs 5 lakh relief for terrorism-hit affected families and implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations.
It talks of “Punjab Greening Authority”, a special anti-drug squad, a complaint redressal board for industrialists, five new PGIs, group housing society for journalists and Rs 15 lakh scholarship to Dalits for studying abroad. It also promises to take up the Amritsar–Mumbai industrial corridor issue on priority.
