Abhi Verma’s killers death penalty again on hold
New Delhi: The Supreme Court put a hold on further execution of murders of Abhi Verma. Abhi was a student of DAV School, Hoshiarpur, the student was kidnapped by Vicky and Jasbir Singh when the demands were not fulfilled they murdered the boy.
A three member Bench headed by Justice Dipak Mishra passed the order after hearing the petitions from both the sides. Contending that the evidence against them should be re-appreciated in the light of an apex court judge allowing admissibility of electronic evidence. The Bench which included Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan, reserved its ruling.
Talking in favor of Vicky he said that the recorded voice over the phone which is asking for money belongs to Jasbir hence his client is innocent. He also said that the car used for kidnapping belonged to Vicky and hence it would carry his fingerprints so one should not rely on this fact. Also there is confusion regarding the color of car as per the witnesses.
Additional Advocate General V Madhukar and complainant’s counsel Abhishek Singh appealec that there is no error in the verdicts of lower courts, high courts and supreme court. Hence the two should be hanged till death.
The SC has rejected the convicts’ appeals besides their review and curative petitions. Subsequently, the president rejected their mercy pleas, and asked them to approach SC with new reasons. In Patiala, the jail authorities had made arrangements for executing the death warrants withMeerut jail hangman Pawan reaching the city a few days ago.
Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana HC has deferred till November 3 hearing on the petition for commuting the convicts’ death sentence.
