AAP not to contest Chandigarh Civic Elections
Chandigarh: AAP has given up on Chandigarh civic polls, preferring to focus on Punjab. The Chandigarh unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided not to contest the Municipal Corporation (MC) polls in December. The decision was taken in a core committee meeting.
AAP leaders feel that contesting the civic MC polls in Chandigarh will shift their focus from the Punjab Assembly polls which are scheduled to be held in 2017.
“Our sole concentration is on the Punjab assembly polls and that is the reason it has been decided not to contest the MC polls in Chandigarh,” said AAP leader Malkeet Singh, a member of the core committee in Chandigarh.
Sources said AAP needs to work a lot in Chandigarh to establish themselves and the party members here felt that the results would have impacted the Punjab polls. “We know we have done really well in Delhi and will do the same in Punjab as well. People want a change but the fact is that we need to establish ourselves here in Chandigarh and that needs a proper chalking out of strategy,” said an AAP leader.
Reacting to AAP’s decision, BJP city chief Sanjay Tandon said, “In the past year, AAP has lost its sheen owing to controversies and the mismanagement in Punjab. They had no option but to run away.”
